March 2026 - Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums

IPSPD(Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums) was founded in 1993 with one goal, to honor our fallen. The original band was called the Indianapolis Firefighters Pipes & Drums and has since grown into what is known today as the Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums. IPSPD is made up of public safety professionals from the Indianapolis Metropolitan area, including Marion, Hendricks, Hamilton, Johnson, and other surrounding counties and communities. Our ranks contain firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers and many other professions within the public safety community.

Clayton Thomas was our first leader and helped forge the band with not only the legacy of the Indianapolis band, but founding the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference (FDIC) Massed Pipes and Drums in 1995. Firefighters from all over the world come to Indy to learn and teach across a week’s time, as well as to play music, honor the fallen, and grow the fellowship with the massed band. Clayton sadly passed in January of 2023 but will always be honored as our Drum Major Emeritus.

Today the band is composed of members from across the state with some as far north as Gary, and as far south as Bloomington and Columbus. Our ranks hold both active duty and retired members from the fire service, EMS, law enforcement, and dispatch. We are also proud to have spouses of active members play, as well as some civilians that actively help us honor those we have lost. We encourage all those with interest to join a local band and continue the heritage of pipes and drums in our profession, as well as honoring the fallen above all else.
