Painesville Township is located in northeast Ohio approximately 25 miles east of Cleveland. The township was founded in 1800; however, fire protection wasn’t provided by Painesville City Fire Department until 1965 when they formed their own. Two stations were built and opened for business on February 1st of 1966 which included the hiring of forty-four men; two full-time each day to staff the quarters. Their pay was $1/hour and $3/call.

The department became a full and part time department in 1990 when they hired the first six, full-time members. Today that number has increased to thirty full-time, and twenty part-time employees as well as the addition of a third station, built in 2008. Now, Painesville Twp FD runs both Fire and EMS calls with ALS capability on all rescue squads, running 3351 total calls in 2023. The station logo, “The Double Nickel”, stems from the address of our fire station, which is 55 Nye Rd.
